A study on recognition and support of long term care insurance for the aged

Abstract
Objectives. The purpose of this study was to investigate dentists¡¯ recognition and support on the Senior Long-term Care Insurance System (hereinafter ¡®SLCI system¡¯). Survey targets were dentists who were working at the area of the Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi-do.

Methods. A survey was conducted, for four month from January 2009, on the 207 dentists. Data was analyzed by SPSS ver. 12.0 for the data analyses such as frequency analysis, crosstabulation, one-way ANOVA and Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficient.

Results. The major results of this survey suggesting to the SLCI system are arranged as follows: 1.44.0% of the respondents replies that they knew just the name of the LSCI system, but only 3.9% of respondents knew about the detailed coverage of the LSCI system. 2. Only 15.9% dentists of the respondents replied knew that dentist was included as a Long-Term Care Committee Grading for adjudications, and 35.3% knew that the dentist¡¯s instructions is compelled by law when dental hygienists to visit home needing care. 3. They more actively are supporting SLCI system when having the disabled person among thir family.

Conclusions. According to the findings, the dentist¡¯s perception of the elderly in long-term care insurance system was low. But overall, dentists¡¯ awareness was affirmative for SLCI system including an extra charge to their premium insurance. The faithful consideration of dentists whose responsibility for oral health care of people as a real SLCI system for the elderly will be expected to contribute further.
